Silver Eagle Outfitters Promotes Cooling Garments to Combat Motorcyclist Heat Stress

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama-March 04, 2003--Silver Eagle Outfitters, LLC, manufacturers of evaporative cooling apparel and products made of a unique three-layer cooling fabric, is making a concerted effort to inform Motorcyclists of their personal cooling alternatives to combat heat stress. By getting the word out about the affordable cost and proven effectiveness of their vests and headwear, which combines evaporative cooling technology with comfortable and efficient design, Silver Eagle Outfitters plans to help reduce the number of recreational heat stress and heat stroke victims in the years to come.

"Our customers are the true proof of how effective our garments are," said Bill Case, Cofounder of Silver Eagle Outfitters. "We can post statistics proving that our apparel reduces dehydration, improves performance, and lowers heart rates, but the only way someone is really going to know how well our vests and headwear work is to put them on and go for a ride in the desert heat."

Finding a reasonable way to combat heat stress, which causes muscle cramps, fatigue, irritability, poor judgment, and increased numbers of accidents has been a frustrating quest for motorcyclists. Because of their prolonged exposure to heat, especially the concentration of heat that is reflected from the asphalt and generated by the motor, motorcyclists run a high risk of suffering from heat stress.

"Since core temperature measures what happens to the muscles, lungs, brain and other organs, small changes become very important and very difficult for the body to handle," said David Pascoe, Ph.D., Doctor of Human Bioenergetics in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Auburn University. Untended, heat stress can escalate to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and even death.

Until recently, most personal cooling gear has required refrigeration and ice packs, pumps, tubes, chemicals or other appliances. Not only is such gear expensive to buy, it is also heavy and uncomfortable to wear, adding to a rider's burden. Silver Eagle Outfitters bases its cooling method on the natural, evaporative cooling process of the human body.

Rather than using cooling gels or ice packs, Silver Eagle garments are constructed of a unique, three-layer evaporative cooling fabric. Activated in minutes by tap water, the garments use evaporative technology to cool the wearer for two to eight hours, depending on the climate and environmental conditions. Fully activated, Silver Eagle apparel remains ultra light and breathable, allowing the wearer full range of motion and consistent comfort. The fabric's water-resistant inner liner pulls heat away from the body and wicks moisture away from the skin, keeping the wearer cool and dry.

Silver eagle garments fit comfortably over street clothes, under leathers, or can be worn directly against the skin. Worn dry, the garments provide an effective barrier to the cold and wind. All Silver Eagle products are machine washable.

This is the solution many motorcyclists have been looking for to protect them from the dangers of the heat. Motorcycle-safety advocates include heat-stress prevention among concerns for riders, recommending three important tactics before hitting the road in hot, dry climates: drink plenty of water, insulate skin from the hot air, and use evaporative cooling.

According to Patricia Messenger, who bought her cooling vest at the Las Vegas Bike Fest in 2002, "With the Arizona heat, [the vest] is a necessity and makes riding my motorcycle much more inviting. The vest is lightweight and provides just the right amount of cooling. When it starts drying out it just takes minutes to refresh the cooling action. It packs so well I can take it along, just in case the temperature soars during the day."

Because of the customer response Silver Eagle Outfitters received from their attendance at a series of motorcycle rallies in 2002, the company is making plans to sell their products at several more throughout 2003. At each rally, they will showcase the zip-front men's classic vests, available in black and gray, which sports an outer shell made of 200 Denier Nylon Oxford, zippered front pockets, and adjustable two-snap waist straps. They will also be selling their popular women's vest, a petite version of the classic vest designed for more torso-exposure, in black, gray, and United States flag pattern.

For safety-conscious riders, a fluorescent high-visibility vest is available with or without reflective tape.

Silver Eagle Outfitters also offers cooling headwear, including baseball-style caps and Do-Rags, all available in a range of colors.
